NextUp Program at Solano College

Sometimes, the hardest part about getting your college education is steering your way around all the bumps in the road. Most students will face challenges throughout this journey. That’s where NextUp comes in.

NextUp provides community college students like you with resources that make a difference. The program offers eligible current and former foster youth support and services that could include help with education and career planning, books and supplies, transportation, tutoring, food, childcare, and emergency housing.

You’re committed to the goal of achieving a college education, and we are committed to helping you get it.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Were in foster care, in any state, for at least one day, on or after their 13th birthday
  • Are enrolled in or planning to enroll in at least nine units or agree to an education plan with the future goal of enrolling in nine units.
  • Are no older than 26 years of age at the commencement of any academic year in which the student first enrolls in the program
    • Students enrolled in the program prior to turning 26 are allowed to continue participating in the program beyond the age of 26
  • Enroll in the NextUp program prior to age 26, disenroll, and subsequently return after turning 26 may be readmitted to the same or another NextUp program

Provided Services

As we are currently in our inaugural semester for the NextUp Program, we are working to create more services for you. Listed below are what is currently offered:

  • All included benefits as an EOPS student
  • Referrals to community resources
  • Specialized NextUp grant tailored to your personal or situational needs
  • HireUp grant: opportunity to be paid CA minimum wage ($16/hr) for taking classes (more details to be shown soon!)

The EOPS program’s primary goal is to encourage the enrollment, retention and transfer of students disadvantaged by language, social, economic and educational circumstances, and to facilitate the successful completion of their goals and objectives in college.

EOPS provides students with support services that includes counseling, Student Educational Plan (SEP), program review requirements, referrals, and financial assistance (contingent on the availability of EOPS funds), EOPS Lab, EOPS Library, and other student success assistance. Our EOPS students will receive focused assistance related to their academic planning and career goals.

Under EOPS, there are additional programs to provide additional support to your academic success. Please note there is one application for EOPS, CARE, and NextUp. Please see the summary of eligibility requirements below.

EOPS

· CA Resident

· Enrolled in 12 units

· Completed less than 48 degree-applicable units

· Qualify for CCPG Fee Waiver A, B, or C (if EFC=0)

· Educationally disadvantaged as determined by Title V criteria

CARE

· Eligible and admitted into EOPS

· At least 18 years old

· Single parent or head-of-household

· Receiving CalWORKs / TANF cash aid for self-and/or dependent child

NextUp

· CA Resident

· Verified foster care placement on or after 13th birthday

· Less than 26 years old at the start of the academic year (Fall + Spring) or previous enrollment in NextUp

· Enrolled in 9 units at Solano Community College or Have a student education plan that list 9 units in the future

· Financial Aid application on file
