With an Associate of Arts Degree or a Certificate of Achievement in one of the World Languages offerings from Solano College, you will open the doors to an enhanced future.

You will:

  • acquire language competence in speaking, writing, reading, listening skills of the target language(s) studied
  • gain valuable skills in cross-cultural communication
  • gain an understanding and appreciation of cultural differences and diversity
  • develop a heightened awareness and respect for a variety of cultural perspectives, histories, literatures, music, customs, and traditions
  • widen your job prospects in various areas where cross-cultural/bilingual communication skills are in high demand, including the fields of business, healthcare, social services, education, state and government agencies, and international diplomacy

The Solano Community College World Language program introduces the fundamentals of language learning (listening, speaking, reading, writing, and culture) with emphasis on language production, grammar, syntax, vocabulary acquisition, and exposure to the culture. The three program options provide the option to study in one or more than one language.

With an Associate of Arts Degree or a Certificate of Achievement in one of the World Languages offerings from Solano College, you will open the doors to an enhanced future.

You will:

Program Learning Outcomes

Associate in Arts in Spanish for Transfer

Students who complete the Associate in Arts in Spanish for Transfer degree, will be able to:

  • Build cultural awareness of Spanish-speaking cultures through comparison and contrast of linguistic variances, as well as various customs, societies, and institutions.
  • Demonstrate reading, writing, and analysis in Spanish at the intermediate/high to advanced proficiency level based on the ACTFL guidelines.
  • Demonstrate oral and aural abilities in Spanish at the intermediate/high to advanced proficiency level based on the ACTFL guidelines.

Foreign Languages, General Associate Degree

Students who complete the Foreign Languages, General Associate Degree will be able to:

  • Converse in an intermediate level in two or more languages: American Sign Language (ASL), French, or Spanish
  • Demonstrate grammatical and semantic proficiency in paragraph or narrative mode (for ASL) at the intermediate low level.
  • Understanding of cultural and community differences

Foreign Languages, Individual Associate Degree

Students who complete the Foreign Languages, Individual Associate Degree will be able to:

  • Converse at an intermediate-mid level in one language: American Sign-Language (ASL), French, or Spanish
  • Demonstrate grammatical and semantic proficiency in paragraph or narrative mode (for ASL) at the intermediate-mid level in one language: American Sign Language (ASL), French, or Spanish
  • Demonstrate understanding of cultural and community differences

Careers in Foreign Language include but are not limited to:

  • Foreign Language and/or Literature Teacher
  • Interpreter
  • Translator
