SCC named a 2022 Champion for Excelling in Equitable Course Placement of Latino/a/x students

Solano Community College (SCC) was recognized by The Campaign for College Opportunity and named a 2022 Champion for Excelling in Equitable Course Placement of Latino/a/x students during a Friday, April 22, 2022 Instagram Live event. The Equity Distinction was granted to SCC and four other California community colleges for successfully supporting at least 70% of their Latino/a/x students who enrolled in a transfer-level English course and successfully completed it within one year of their initial enrollment.  Superintendent-President Celia Esposito-Noy praised faculty, staff, managers, and students for their efforts to ensure all students succeed in transfer-level English regardless of the historic challenges that many of our students face.  “Our English faculty led the effort for equity in English course placement long before AB 705.  We are seeing the results of their work and congratulate them and the successful students.”

AB 705 (Irwin 2017) requires colleges to use students’ high school grades in English and math, and overall Grade Point Average (GPA) for college English and Math placement, places restrictions on requiring students to enroll in remedial courses, and recommends colleges replace overly-long remedial course sequences with co-requisite or supplemental instruction models in which students receive additional support while enrolled in a transferable, college-level class. Under the law, colleges must place students into courses that maximize the probability that they will enter and complete transfer-level coursework in English and mathematics within one-year of enrollment.
