Community College League of California Announces $10,000 in Scholarships for Students

SACRAMENTO, CA – As part of its ongoing effort to support affordable and accessible college opportunities for California Community College students, the Community College League of California (League) announces a new scholarship program. In Spring 2024, ten students from across the state will each be awarded a $1,000 scholarship to support their academic pursuits.

The newly created scholarship is funded by the proceeds from the 2021 book “A College for All Californians: A History of the California Community Colleges,” co-edited by League President & CEO Larry A. Galizio, Ph.D. and George Boggs, Ph.D., president and CEO Emeritus of the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) and superintendent/president emeritus of Palomar College.

“The publishers asked us how we wanted to spend any proceeds from the book’s sales,” said Galizio. “Without a beat, Dr. Boggs said that we wanted the money to go for a scholarship for students.”

The scholarships are open to students enrolled in six or more units at any of California’s community colleges. Students must have a minimum 2.0 GPA and work a minimum 10 hours weekly. Applicants must also submit short responses to questions about their community college experiences and plans.

Galizio said that the scholarship acknowledges California’s community college history and its dedication to creating opportunities for all students to pursue their personal and academic goals.

“The creation of this scholarship stems from a deep-seated belief in the transformative power of education,” said Galizio. “The rich history of California’s Community Colleges is centered on student success, and providing scholarships to students whose lives are changed through community college is a powerful way to enhance that legacy”

Applications for the scholarship will be accepted through March 31, 2024, and awards announced in early May.
