SCC Dance Presents Annual Spring Dance Recital for One Night Only!
Fairfield, CA – The Solano Community College (SCC) Dance department is pleased to present its spring dance concert, Flashback, on Friday, May 10 at 7:30 p.m. The concert will showcase the work of students, guests, and faculty choreographers.
Flashback will present dance pieces performed by SCC current and former dance students, guest performers, including students at the Early College High School (ECHS) program, and none other than SCC Superintendent-President Celia Esposito-Noy, who earlier this year announced her retirement.
Dancers will perform styles including modern, jazz, hip hop, ballet, contemporary, and disco, set to songs like “Mamma Mia” by ABBA, “Let’s Groove” by Earth, Wind & Fire, and “You Should Be Dancing” by the Bee Gees.
Director Cain is a former competitor and former dance instructor with Fred Astaire dance studio.
“One of my favorite dance styles was disco,” said Cain. “I thought it would be fun to incorporate various styles of music and choreography from the era of the ‘70s. So many folks love the ‘70s and can relate to the growth and trends of this era, so I came up with Flashback.”
Guest choreographers include Eliana Baker and Jeylisa Corona, two current SCC students who choregraphed a duet; Shelby Banovitz of the Rodriquez ECHS program; Ginger Cain, full-time SCC faculty in Dance, Kinesiology and Health Education; Adrienne Cary, full-time SCC Business and adjunct dance faculty; Suzanna Ferris, a former SCC dance student and former dance assistant to Cain; Omari Johnson, a Bay Area dance instructor; and Cherise Bryant-Ortiz, a dance teacher in Southern California.
The SCC Dance department will also celebrate two graduating students, include Janessa Sales, who is set to graduate this May with the first ever Associate of Arts (AA) degree in Dance from SCC. Sales has been a dedicated student of Cain’s since 2014. The AA Dance degree was developed by Ginger Cain and made official in 2020.
Additionally, Eliana Baker will be graduating this spring with an AA Degree in Liberal Studies. She will transfer to CSU Northridge as a Dance-Kinesiology Major. She hopes to eventually become a physical therapist for dancers.
Several of the dancers performing in Flashback recently attended the California Dance Education Association (CDEA) Statewide Conference at CSU East Bay, and performed at the Santa Rosa Junior College second annual Community Dance Festival.
“I am grateful to share my talent and joy of dance with others,” said Cain. “I love working with so many folks in preparation to perform. Seeing the progress of my students from start to finish brings me a sense of accomplishment to see their success and sharing of lifetime memories.”
Flashback will be held at Solano College Theatre on Friday, May 10 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 for general admission, and $10 for students/seniors/military; additional fees apply. Audience members are invited to dress to theme in ‘70s attire.
